The Kolkata Metro is a rapid transit system serving the Kolkata in the Indian state of West Bengal. The network currently consists of two operational lines of 27.22 km (16.91 mi) from Noapara to Kavi Subhash and of 5.8 km (3.6 mi) from Salt Lake Sector V to Salt Lake Stadium (total 33.02 km (20.52 mi)) with four other lines in various phases of construction. The system has a mix of underground, at-grade, and elevated stations using both broad-gauge and standard-gauge. Kolkata Metro operates between 05:45 and 21:55 hours, and the fares ranges between Rs. 5 to 30.
The Kolkata Metro was the first planned and operational rapid transit system in India. Initially planned in 1920s and construction started in 1970s, the first elevated stretch from Bhawanipore (now Netaji Bhawan) to Esplanade opened in 1984. The Line 2 or East-West corridor opened in 2020. It is the fifth-longest operational metro network in India after the Delhi Metro, Hyderabad Metro, Chennai Metro and Namma Metro. 
Metro Railway, Kolkata and Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation are the owners and operator of the system. On 29 December 2010, Metro Railway, Kolkata became the 17th zone of the Indian Railways, completely owned and funded by the Ministry of Railways. It is the only metro in the country to be controlled by Indian Railways. The total number of trips per day is 284, and carrying more than 700,000 passengers daily.
